Ministry Scheduler Pro vs. ParishStaq: Not all scheduling tools are created equal
When parishes are asked to consider tools like Pushpay's ParishStaq, it's often because of the appeal of using one system for everything. But that convenience comes with tradeoffs.
Take a closer look at how ParishStaq compares to Ministry Scheduler Pro—and what that means in practice.
The differences that matter most
Creating the schedule
MSP: The auto-scheduler builds an accurate schedule in seconds—accounting for availability, preferences, family groupings, and fair distribution. Conflicts are prevented automatically, and MSP warns if you try to manually assign someone who isn't available.
ParishStaq: Scheduling is an incremental process. Assignments are sent out, volunteers accept or decline them individually, and admins adjust the schedule manually.

Filling open positions
MSP: Openings are handled automatically. Volunteers request subs in one click. MSP also sends an automated Available Positions email to ensure all positions are filled before Sunday.
ParishStaq: Holes appear in the schedule every time a volunteer declines an assignment. Swaps aren't always an option. Without a built-in system to fill open positions automatically, the responsibility falls back on the admin.
Volunteer access
MSP: Volunteers can view the full schedule on the free mobile app and sync assignments with their personal calendar. Family settings—unique to MSP—allow households to manage availability together. Families and service preferences are always honored.
ParishStaq: Volunteers cannot see the full schedule, only individual assignments. There's no built-in logic to ensure family members are assigned together.

Liturgical scheduling
MSP: You can set up weekly, monthly, or annual services. They can be named according to the liturgical calendar with lectionary readings added automatically. Volunteers can add any service to their preferences, so they're only scheduled at times that work for them.
ParishStaq: There is no recurring structure or built-in liturgical calendar. Services must be recreated and manually adjusted each week.
